The Learner Driving Test



The Theory Test

This must be passed before taking the practical test and is divided into two elements.

Multiple Choice questions

There are 35 questions to answer in 40 minutes. The pass mark is 30 correct answers.

Hazard Perception Test

This consists of 14 video clips each containing at least 1 “developing hazard”. Each must be recognised by clicking the computer mouse as soon as possible. A maximum of 5 points can be scored depending on how soon the hazard is recognised. The pass mark is 44 from a maximum of 75.

Both of these elements must be passed together in order to pass the theory test.


The Practical Test

At the start of the test, the examiner will ask two questions regarding the maintenance of the vehicle, known as “Show and Tell” questions.

The driving element of the test will last approximately 30-40 minutes, covering a variety of road types and including any two of four set manoeuvres.

The examiner will offer a debrief when giving the result of the test.
